A revised second English edition, translated by Robert Wolley, of French scholar Nicolas Besongne's (d.1697) L’estat de la France. Originally published in 1661, the work details the cultural and political state of nation in the latter half the seventeenth century; a period which saw the domination of Cardinal Mazarin and lengthy conflict with the Spanish Empire. The first English edition appeared in 1671.
