KING, Edward. Hymns to the supreme being. In imitation of the eastern songs.

London. Printed by T. Bensley; for J. White, 1798. New edition.
8vo. viii, 190pp. With a half-title. Contemporary gilt-tooled speckled calf, black morocco lettering-piece. Rubbed, slight loss to head of spine. Marbled endpapers. 'Hester Deane / a token of Friendship from / The Rev. Dr. Benson / 1800'.
The revised, second edition of antiquary Edward King's (1734/5-1807) devotional verse. First published anonymously in 1780, the King's preface to this edition makes clear his reasoning for claiming authorship: 'finding...that the work had been attributed to other;- and finding also that, in consequence of my neglect to have the Book duly entered at Stationer's Hall, advantage had been taken, to publish it by strangers; I have now thought it even a duty to come forwards. One, or more surreptitious Editions have been printed;- with several Errata;- with an unauthorised, and improper Advertisement on the back of the Title page, concerning an intended Publication, which might have been understood to have been written by me.'
