RITSON, Joseph. Robin Hood: A Collection of all the Ancient Poems, Songs and Ballads, now extant, Relative to that Celebrated English Outlaw.

[London]. Routledge, [1997].
8vo. In two volumes. Numerous vignette woodcuts in the text text by Thomas Bewick. Original publisher's green cloth, green cloth slipcase. A fine copy. Bookplate of John Fowles to FEP of Vol. I. With publisher's prospectus loosely inserted.
A well executed facsimile reprint of the 1887 edition of English antiquary and author Joseph Ritson's (1757-1803) magnum opus, an exhaustive collection of all known sources of the tale of the Robin Hood, that, when first published in 1795, revived interest in the medieval figure. Although containing pieces of questionable quality, the addition of Ritson's copious notes and Bewicks' cuts ensured lasting significance. The first included piece, and one of the longest, is 'A Lytell Geste of Robyn Hode', reprinted from the early English edition of Wynken de Worde.

John Fowles (1926-2005), English novelist, notable works include The Magus (1965) and The French Lieutenant's Woman (1969).
