An apparently unrecorded broadside advertisement for Glasgow-based manufacturers of Esse cast iron products, Smith & Wellstood. The company was founded in 1854 by Scotsman James Smith, who had previously established a business in in Jackson, Mississippi selling the new American type of enclosed cooking ranges and stoves. Realising these innovative products offered significant advantages in efficiency and cleanliness over the open fires commonly used in Europe, he had returned to his native land, and arranged for the manufacture of his own versions, initially at the Bonnybridge foundry of George Ure, 'The Columbian Stove Works', named in honour of Christopher Columbus.
