The first edition of natural philosopher and mathematician William Whiston's (1667-1752) biography of theologian and philosopher Samuel Clarke (1675-1729). Clarke's interest in, and influential promotion of, Newtonianism secured his friendship with Whiston, the pair having met when Whiston passed on to Clarke about 1698 the position of chaplain to Bishop Moore of Norwich. Whiston would eventually succeed Isaac Newton (1642-1727) as Lucasian professor of mathematics at Cambridge.

The last nine pages contain catalogues of the works of both Clarke and Whiston, and a proposal for printing by subscription, Mosis Chorenensis historiæ Armeniacæ Libri III.
