The sole edition in English of a essay on English National defence by Swiss Captain of the Engineers of the Army of the Confederation Paul EmileĢ Maurice (1805-1854). Contained within are suggestions for defending Britain against French invasion, with Maurice concluding that 'six or seven entrenched camps, on a circuit of 10 to 15 miles radial distance from London' would neither 'entail a ruinous expenditure on the country' nor 'be incompatible with the development of the great commercial and industrial enterprises'.
