The first edition of journalist and historian John Clark Marshman's (1794-1877) account of the rise and progress of the Baptist mission at Serampore, Bengal.

Marshman's father, Joshua Marshman (1768-1837), together with missionaries William Carey (1761-1834) and William Ward (1769-1823) directed activities of the Serampore Mission from 1800. They established the Serampore Mission Press, as well as a paper mill, and in 1818, in conjunction with his son, Marshman founded the first newspaper ever printed in any Eastern language, the Sumachar Durpun, or, Mirror of News. The impact of the press was immense, proving invaluable both as a means of distributing translations of the Bible and literary periodicals promoting education.
