The third edition of a long essay by French philosopher Charles de Villers (1765-1815), most significant for translating the works of Kant into French. This volume, winner of an essay contest hosted by The Class of Moral and Political Sciences at the French National Institute titled 'By what causes has the spirit of liberty developed in France from Francois I to 1789?', argued that the Reformation was the most integral component of human history since the foundation of Christianity. Villiers would caution, however, against 'absolute liberty', warning against the more 'enthusiastic' sects, which were equated to the excess and fervour of the Jacobins.
