A collection of anecdotes concerning 'extraordinary characters' by one John Cecil, in actuality the pseudonym of English satirist and bookseller William Hone (1780-1842). Hone, known for a historic lawsuit in which he battled government censorship and was acquitted on all charges, would write a great many political satires, often directed against one 'Dr Slop', or Sir John Stoddart, publisher of The Times.
