MCCARTHY, Justin. A history of our own times: from the accession of queen vitoria to the general election of 1880.

London. Chatto & Windus, 1882. New edition.
8vo. In four volumes With half-titles. Handsomely bound in contemporary gilt-tooled half-calf, marbled paper boards, contrasting red and green morocco lettering-pieces, marbled edges. Lightly rubbed, spines dulled. Marbled endpapers, tickets of London-based booksellers Gilbert & Field to all FEPs, scattered spotting.
A handsome copy of the best known work by Justin McCarthy (1830-1912), Irish nationalist, journalist, historian, novelist, and politician. First published in 1879-80, the History of our Own Times recounts the period between Queen Victoria's accession and her Diamond Jubilee, with McCarthy's 'peculiar brand of anglophilia and deeply held Irish patriotism' (Townend, 2007) being eminently evident.
