The first edition of six lectures on Early English antiquities by commander James Frederick Hodgetts (1828-1906). After a career in the Royal Navy, Hodgetts began to write and lecture on archaeological topics, contributing to the 'Journal of the British Archaeological Association' and the 'Antiquary.' The lectures contained in this volume, delivered to a small private audience in the British museum, draw on the artefacts held in the institution's Anglo-Saxon room.
