A tale of tresco, the tavistock chimes, and other poems, mostly of the west country.
Tavistock.
T. W. Greenfield, 1894.
First edition.
8vo.
[6], 72pp, [2]. Original publisher's gilt-tooled turquoise cloth. A trifle rubbed and marked. Title page browned. Presentation copy, inked inscription to head of title: 'N. L. Southam, d.d. D. P. Alford; Christmas 1903'.
The sole edition of a collection of verse inspired by a residence in Tresco, the second-largest of the Isles of Scilly, and Tavistock, Devon. This presentation copy is inscribed by the author, the Rev. Daniel Pring Alford (1838-1911), a former vicar of Tavistock and president of the Taunton Field Club. Described as a 'zealous student of history and literature' in his obituary, Alford characterises the volume as 'a sheaf from a harvest slowly gathered in', and a ward against 'the growing forces of materialism.'
