[JOHNSON, Samuel], NEWTON, A. Edward. Sale Catalogue of Dr. Johnson's Library. Elkin Matthews. 1925. Limited Edition.
[2], 3-11, [1], 28 plates reproducing an annotated copy of the original Christies' sale catalogue of Dr. Johnson's library. No. 23 of a signed limited edition of 250. Original blue paper boards. Lightly rubbed, spine repaired at head with slight loss to head and foot. With a vivacious essay on bibliography in general and Johnson in particular by A. Edward Newton, this scarce volume is particularly useful as a reproduction of the now almost unobtainable catalogue of the Christies' sale that dispersed Johnson's library in some 662 lots, ranging from the usual ancient classics, through a First Folio of Shakespeare (making a mere £1. 2s, although later bibliographical scholarship does reveal that Johnson's copy was heavily foodstained!) to literature from the pen of Johnson's contemporaries.
