Ink inscription of Bateman Robson, 1782, to verso of FFEP, other ink inscriptions on the same page and fly-leaves scratched out.

Attractively bound in contemporary blue calf, five raised bands, richly gilt, A.E.G., marbled endpapers. A trifle rubbed with some surface wear to spine. Ink inscription to verso of FFEP 'Frances M. Amphlett from her affectionate Grandpapa John Shapter July 1887.', ink annotation to title reading 'Jonathan Birch who died 1847', occasional foxing, substantial tears to leaves from p.153-161 touching text and engravings - sympathetically repaired without loss.

Marbled endpapers, A.E.G, attractively gauffered re-using some of the same small tools as used to boards. Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester's copy, with his bookplate to FEP. Lot ticket for the Christies sale of Gloucester's library in 2006 loosely inserted.
