LANCASHIRE PAROCHIAL LIBRARY COPY

MORE, Henry. Enchiridion ethicum, Praecipua moralis philosophiae rudimenta Complectens, Illustrata ut plurimum Veterum Monumentis, & ad Probitatem Vitae perpetuo accommodata.

Londini [i.e. London]. Typis & impensis J. Downing, 1711. Fourth edition.
8vo. xlii, [8], 318, 86pp, [2]. With an engraved portrait frontispiece, and a terminal publisher's advertisement leaf. Contemporary panelled calf, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece, gilt. Lightly rubbed. Recent bookplate of Robert J. Hayhurst to FEP, earlier bookplate of the Parochial Library of Flookborough, Lancaster, to verso of title-page, frontispiece a trifle shaved at head, small paper flaw to text of leaf O2 (without loss of sense).
A handsome copy of an early edition of philosopher and theologian Henry More's (1614-1687) influential manual of ethics. First published in 1668, the work is presented in a series of twenty-three 'Noemata Moralia', or ethical principles, which More maintains are intuitively apprehended and as immutable as the laws of mathematics.
